I was sooooo on the fence about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, especially with so many Godzilla fans crying foul over his sidekick role. Being a big fan as y’all know, I pushed myself to go with the kiddo but for the first time, I didn’t G-gear up for it.
So much of this thing is cringeworthy. Zero the emotional impact of Minus One (long may it reign as the definitive Godzilla movie). Not even on the same level as the very good Monarch series on Apple TV. However, GxK is no dumber than all which preceded Shin Godzilla and the 2014 American Godzilla (two high amidst the upper echelon) kicking off the entire MonsterVerse series. Humans begone from this film with its rotten story, flagrant lack of continuity and just let the Kaiju kick ass.
On the latter level, I got my money’s worth, since the monster mash is the reason to show up. Godzilla may be relegated to Kong, or as I called him, Optimus Primal Kong, but when the moments count, they COUNT. Hilarious seeing the Big G curled like a cat inside the Roman Coliseum. See it on the biggest screen and loudest sound system, leave your brain in the cup holder and you’ll have a fun time.

Yeah, precisely the advice to give here. I know the audiences are having a blast and the movie makes no pretentions about what it is. On that level, a huge success and it’s running like hell with the box office.

Can’t wait for you to see Minus One. Masterpiece. I see people GxK a “Monsterpiece.” In many ways, they should. The action is constant and the Kaiju and apes rule this thing.

I think going to a Godzilla or Kong movie requires suspending disbelief upon entry… so I’m in. A bad Godzilla movie is still a Godzilla movie.

Minus One and the 1954 original are the only Godzilla films you can take seriously as intended works of art. The rest, yep, you know what you’re getting yourself into. A goofy Godzilla smash up movie with a beer is a good antidote to a crappy day. 🙂

I’m on the fence about this one too but haven’t had a chance to see it yet. My mom will be thrilled , being a huge fan of both creatures. We grew up watching all the movies. I am looking forward to the new Planet of the Apes though. 😁

At first, I thought way too much about GxK based on the full presentation and wasted too much energy analyzing it. It needs no analyzing. It makes no pretention about being a holy rolling mess to serve only the order of chaos and to feed the need of monster mashing escapism. I love Kong, but Godzilla rules them all. My mom is a Godzilla fan for most of her life and I felt so guilty not taking her to Minus One the first time I went I made a second outing just for her. The third time to see it black and white. I was correct in my assumption she wasn’t interested in this new one. She’s old school, but she’s not down with this pure CGI stuff, though we all love the 2014 film. She loved Minus One, BTW.

And yes, the new Planet of the Apes looks fantastic. Borrowing some of told 1970s film themes, but the CGI is next level. Scary good.
