I need to watch both movies again. For some reason I’m tempted to watch the original theatrical release with Ford’s noir (and slightly corny) voiceover. Part of me really liked that Mickey Spillane hardboiled schlock.

Man, I am a total whore for both those movies and 2049 has leapt to my 2nd favorite movie of all-time. They both mean a ton to me, movie and music.

I’ll have to give 2049 another go. When I watched it originally, I thought it was decent, but not the same quality — but you know how you have to be in a certain frame of mind to really get absorbed, and I might have been in an off mood that day.
Queuing up for later…

Cool. Let me know if you get a different take on it. I will reserve my thoughts until then.

I rewatched it last night finally and was left with a better impression than the first time I watched it. I liked the themes they explored, now that I was able to be more attentive to those elements. I don’t know that it shot up quite as high as it did for you, but it is definitely in my top-20 as a companion piece to my favorite scifi movie of all time.

Top 20 of all time is amazing for any genre. I think that’s wonderful you gave it another shot. Yes, it’s the themes and the atmosphere and progression beyond Dick’s vision and the original film that bowled me over. Specifically the concept of two forms of AI finding genuine love in a dystopian hellhole devalued by human living as trash in a trash culture. Joi being a widespread pleasure model for anyone with a dime to incorporate her in their mundane world, but being EVERYTHING to K that we feel her loss like he did, a replicant seeking humanity and love while programmed to hunt down his own kind. The movie almost made me wept in this respect the first few times I watched it. I was in a very angry, vulnerable and pained spot in my life when the movie hit DVD and I was so pissed at myself for not seeing it in the theater. All in my former life and nobody else was interested. I should’ve gone by myself. I pray they have an anniversary release in the theater since it has cultivated a league of fans. During this volatile time in my life, I related to Ryan Gosling getting the news he may be harboring something not only human but scathing inside of him to heart. I have watched this beautiful (ugly) movie almost 30 times now and I scream quietly “GOD…DAMMIT!” with Gosling, because that was who I was at the time. I hated my life, hated everything, was considering a bold move that took more than a year before I did it. BR49 was my therapy and watching that love story between K and Joi in the midst of an eco-disaster…you can get why it spoke to me.

It’s one of the few films I would have gone to the theater for in recent years, but no one was interested in watching with me.
I hear you. Thanks for sharing that background. I can relate. Thanks for encouraging me to give it another go.

Yeah, I couldn’t get anyone to go either, though I was hyped for it. I stupidly just let it go since I have no problem hitting a theater by myself now and then if the movie warrants it and nobody wants to play. I kick myself for not going to BR49, considering what an impact it’s left on me.
